Scenario: 10 client network I assisted upgrading to SBS 2003. The clients previously used Outlook Express and individual POP accounts with their ISP for e-mail (no internal e-mail server at all.) With the SBS upgrade, we connected them to Exchange as follows:

1. Install Outlook 2003 choosing to upgrade Outlook Express.
2. Create an e-mail account for "Exchange Server" and set as the default account.
3. Copy the existing mail out of the personal folders left behind by Express into the new Exchange Mailbox.

This worked fine on the first 9 clients which are a mixture of XP Pro and 2K. The 10th however (Win2K) had the following problem:

Trying to create an Exchange Server account from within Outlook goves the following error:
Code:
You cannot add a Microsoft Exchange Account to this profile while Outlook is running. Please exit Outlook and use the Mail Icon in the Control Panel to add a Microsoft Exchange account.
Following directions and using the CP Applet to add an Exchange account produces the following:
Code:
Outlook could not log on. Check to make sure you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or conected to complete this action.
We were using the correct server name and account (remember, this worked on the first 9 machines). The machine is running Win2KSP4. It is correctly joined to the domain and the DNS server is correctly set to the SBS server's IP. I can ping the server by name, navigate to all shares, etc.

Any suggestions?

In the control panel application, when you enter in the server name and mailbox account name and press "check name", does the name and server name become underlined showing that it can validate the username and server name?
Also - are they maybe set to work offline?

They are not set for offline. The message shown is what comes up when attempting to validate the name.

I found one reference to a possible damaged RPC protocol we will try when we can. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Youve probably tried this already - maybe not...
can they authenticate from a different PC that is known to have connected already?

Basically delete that users profile, logon as a new user, then try to see if you can create the account from that PC?

Im just looking at if it's a PC problem, or an exchange problem at this point.
