Hi,

I recently migrated our users off of an Exchange 5.5 server to a new Exchange 2000 server. Everything seems to be working Ok, except some users (myself included) have noticed that Outlook 2002 can be slow to display or send messages. Sometimes a grey box with a status bar will pop up saying that outlook is retrieving the info from the Exchange server. I've noticed this happen especially on messages with attachments on them. The exchange server (and NIC) are brand new, as is the switch that connects the desktops and exchange server. Any ideas?

Could a screwy NIC or TCP/IP on the domain controller cause this?

As a test, replace te switch with a simple HUB, or at least some of the problem PCs to check.

That's not really possible since a) the exchange is in production and b) we haven't had a hub around here for almost a year.

I appreciate the help, but I don't understand what switching from a switch to a hub accomplish/isolate.

Try disabling instant messenger integration under Tools | Options | Other.

Outlook tries to find out if the contact that sent the email is online
with Messenger. So when you select each email it tries to connect to
Messenger and if it isn't configured properly then this is what causes the
delays.

Hope it helps!!

Thanks, Eduardo. I tried that, but I'm still seeing delays in viewing messages with attachments or sending to recipients that aren't in the global address list.

I'm really starting to wonder if this is being caused by the domain controller, rather than the clients or exchange server itself. Copying files from that machine over the network (it's a 100MBs full duplex switched network) seems to take longer than it should (5 minutes to copy a 300 meg file). Maybe the RPC requests are getting bogged down?

Anyhoo, I appreciate any advice or suggestions!

Some switches are known to cause network delays, and since you mentioned it was all new... it was worth a shot.
