Hi. Since I've upgraded to Outlook 2003 I have been unable to conect to my Exchange 5.5 server via our Checkpoint NG firewall using Checkpoint Securemote VPN client. This worked fine with Outlook XP. I am running XP pro SP1 with Outlook 2003 in cached mode. Are there any protocol changes made in Outlook 2003 that may cause this. Could it be trying to use RPC over HTTP as a default? I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Barry

In fact there was a protocol change in OL2003 that would cause this. Previous versions of outlook supported named pipes and socket connections, Outlook 2003 only supports sockets. Since a socket connection requires port 135 and statically mapped ports for the IS and DS to be open when going through a firewall, and you likely didn't have this setup, the older clients would fall back to named pipes and get in. With outlook 2003 you will need to open these ports up for logon to work. Here is an article on how to statically map the IS and DS ports in 5.5:

marcn29,
Thanks for the tip! We'll have to test that out. Though with our VPN client that shouldn't be an issue it still deserves investigation. I'll post nay results I get from our test.

Thank you.
