Outlook 2002 Problem

running MS Office XP/2002 on a Gateway 1.8GHz PC with 768 MB SDRAM and a 40GB HDD. OS Windows XP Professional.

I'm using Outlook 2002 and it's locks ups at least once every single day for the last 6 months. I very weary of using Detect and Repair. I've uninstalled and re-installed several times but later that dday or the next day Outlook 2002 locks up.

What else am I running. To determine if there are any sonftware incompatibility I only opened Outlook 2002 when no other applications were runnung and closed it whenever I had to use another app and closed all open apps when I loaded Outlook 2002 to get my mail. I use the calendar and todo list. I've had it and am thinking of moving to linex and Corel Application Suite but my firm has a sizeable investment in MS's dysfunctional OSs and software.

Questions :
1. Is the pc in Domain environment or Workgroup?
2. Do you open outlook typing a password or just it opens?
3. what is the error message when it locks up?

DolDol, thanks for your reply.

1) It is a workgroup (Home network laptop & this PC. Currently the laptop is not connected to the Access Point.)

2) No password required.

3) No error message is displayed.

I look forward to your response. I haven't been able to find any reference to this problem in Microsoft's Knowledgebase on here.

How big is your .pst file?

Outlook will slowly grind to a halt if it's too big.

Also, did you turn off your virus software during installation? *Remember.......
If you don't use your head,
your going to have to use your feet.

What do you mean by this? Describe more specific about the action. Open outlook -> Just finishes without any errors....?
or after opening...it seems it is trying to open....but after 30 secs later....freezes....?

Do you connect to network before launching outlook or, after launching outlook, do you synchronize? Which one?

First, let me thank all of you who have staken the time to reply to my post.

THe current size of my PST file 44.2 MB. Yes, I turned off my virus software during installation. However, I do not disable Norton AntiVirus during my daily (sometime twice daily) Detect and Repair procedures.

Yes, I will be more sprecific. I click on an e-mail to open it and the hourglass appears and I can no longer do anything else in Outlook, I open the Task Manager and all entries for Outlook are marked "Not responding."

I click to send an e-mail and ditto the above...

I can be creating an e-mail (typing text in the text window and sometimes the hourglass appears and ditto the above...

I don't recall the crash happening in Calendar, Notes or the ToDO list. I seems only to occur when I performing a function that deals with e-mail.

After each crash Outlook opens with no problem and I can perform functions in Calendar and Notes but can not do anything with e-mail without Outlook locking up. Time does not appear to be relevant.

It always appears to open normally.

I use locks up and crash interchangeably.

No synchronisation is involved. I connect to my hub which connects to my router. I have disconnected my laptop from the hub to determine if the frequency of the problem is changed and it does not appear to alter the frequency of the problem.

It means, if you disconnect network from your PC, outlook problem doesn't happen? If it is the case, Reinstall TCP/IP protocol or Lan adapter.

Or, no matter what it is connected to the network or not, if the problem happens, it sounds like your outlook itself is something wrong.
Reinstall outlook deleting keys in registry ;

Start -> Run -> regedit -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsot\Office 1. 10.0\Outlook
2. Outlook
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHIN\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office 1. 10.0\Outlook
2. Outlook

And also a folder under ;
C:\Document and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Applications\Microsoft\Outlook.

I recommend you rename all the folders above(registry & folder) and in case it was successful after reinstall, delete the old folders and keys.

As I state in my reply disconnecting my laptop "...does not appear to alter the frequency of the problem." I have previously tried removing all registry keys prior to reinstalling Office XP. I've tried it several times.

I am having a similar problem, only that outlook locks up after clicking the send button. The system is on a network and retrieving mail from an exchange 5.5 server. The OS is XP Pro, outlook is ver. 2002, we're not using any pst's or offline folders.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Welcome to the club. I have automated the Detect and Rapair option. I have two CD drives. I leave the Office XP CD in the CD-ROM drive and have scheduled the reinstall at 2:00am each morning. MS is no help.

If you find a solution let me know.
