Outlook 2000 will not save passwords

Windows XP home. Windows networking. Configure Outlook with the POP and SMTP servers, the account and check save password. Click Send/Receive and prompts for password, enter and it gets email. exit Outlook, restart receive error, manually send/receive and prompts for password.
Suggestions???
