Is there an option to include an attachment in a "reply"? I know when you forward an email the attachment is included. I found in tools, options, preferences, email options, On replies and forwards: Attach original message.

But using this option attaches the entire previous email with the attachment...Is there a way to setup Outlook to include just the attachment when sending a reply?

what version of outlook

one thing you can also try is to use the forward, that way you will have the attachment as well as the orginial email text, you can always delete the text

We are using Outlook 2000...Yeah, the forward option definatly works...But when you forward, it doesn't copy the email address from the sender like the reply does...You know users can be kinda picky sometimes...

In the same place you found for attaching an original message for forwarding the box right above it is for replying. Set that option to attach an original message as well.

If it still doesn't work try changing your outgoing mail format to HTML or plain text. Even though, in theory, the setting is for new mail it sometimes affects the sending of attachments (i.e. they get dropped).

Cheers.

What kind of solution is that?
A reply will NEVER keep the attached files!

Why would it anyway? If you reply with the attachments included, you would just be sending them back where they came from. What a waste of traffic!

marcs41,

My first paragraph does work in sending the attachment. I just double checked it. It attaches the entire original email (including the attachment) as an attachment. I agree with you that its a waste of traffic and server space, and I don't know why anyone would want to do it, but that wasn't the question.

The second paragraph is wrong and I shouldn't have posted it. It was an error on my part. It only applies when there are problems forwarding attachments but bdoub1eu doesn't have problems with that.

Cheers.

I read that 3 times and still did not get it.
Now, I think you mean to set the reply option to Attach the original message?
That will keep the attacments too indeed, but it will ALWAYS do that and it is very annoying to receive e-mail formed in such a way. After several replies, you will be opening e-mails in e-mails in e-mails in e-mails just to read it.
So much easier to first copy the sender(s), click forward and copy the sender(s) into the To field.

And I stick with my first remark: If you reply with the attachments included, you would just be sending them back where they came from which is a waste of time, traffic, diskspace etc.

Hi marcs41,

Yes, that is what I meant. I also can't figure out why anyone would want to reply with the orignal attachment. I agree with you it will be very annoying and, as stated, a waste of traffic and server space.

PS: I like how you're posting reminders to members, particularly new ones, to thank people for their help. Its always nice to know if a post helped someone.

Cheers.

Some of us started reminding members about that, as lately, a lot of people come and ask away but never give any credit and just take, take and take, those are the 'leeches' and sooner or later get removed which is a shame as some post are helpful for others too.
This site is not your average free helpdesk. It is a site to be used to post problems in a professional environment, by professionals and to be handled professionally, both give and take.
The answers, and thus service, provided deserves some gratitude and a star-post will indicate others that there is a high chance of finding a solution in that thread.

marcs41 <If you reply with the attachments included, you would just be sending them back where they came from which is a waste of time, traffic, diskspace etc.>

One good reason, IMO, to reply with the attachments is to keep the disparate parts of the conversation together. When I receive a reply (actually a forward returned to me) with the attachments intact, I am able to delete previous messages and keep one copy, for my achives, of the entire conversation for CYA purposes.

Of course, it's very possible that there is a better way of accomplishing this idea that I am not aware of. If there is, I would welcome some enlightement. :)

No-one stops anyone from keeping the first message with the attachment (or even saving the attachment) and only keep the last message from anything following that.
It minimizes traffic and filing space.

It can work either way, but it al boils down to principles and common sense, and that is where it fails most of the time.

I have seen users send an e-mail with attachment, then reply with the message (and att.) as attachment to the reply, PLUS they attached a revised version of the document. This went on several times until the message got so big they ran into size limitations and were wondering why. It turned out there were over 60 revised documents included.
Now that is a waste!

marcs41 - I understand what you mean. I hate having to open attachments to attachments to... etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Is there any way that anyone knows of to associate (after the conversation is over) several emails, journal entries, etc. together aside from assigning categories?

Thanks.
