How do I set up Outlook 2000 so that I can view message headers to select before I download them from POP3 via mobile phone?

I need to select which messages I want to read. Simply setting the maximum download size is not sufficient unless I have missed something

sorry, are you connecting to your pop3 mailbox with the phone or connecting to outlook via the phone, if it is the former there should be a setting to download headers only.

Thanks for your help, Si.

I have three connection methods

1. Office LAN to POP3
2. Home ISDN to POP3
3. Mobile Phone to POP3.

Home is no problem, I am not bothered about selecting which messages to download. From Home I use DUN to connect to ISP then open Outlook

In Office I start Outlook, and then rely on LAN to connect to ISP

For Mobile use I have the ISP number configured in Outlook so I expect to simply attach the phone (haven't got IR/wireless set up yet), start Outlook and then select Send/Receive. Works fine, except I don't get choice of which messages to download.

In Outlook 97 there was a Remote Mail toolbar. I never had the need to set it up, but collegeages tell me it was easy in 97 but none of them has managed to set up Outlook 2000 to do same thing!

Am I missing something or has there been a major change from 97 to 2000 functionality?

TIA

Vic

There is a remote mail toolbar in Outlook 2000. Go view -> toolbars and select remote.

You have the option to mark to retrieve or mark to retrieve a copy.

Cheers.

Thanks for your response.

The remote toolbar is what I am looking for. I can get to it on old laptop with Outlook 97, but not on new one with Outlook 2000 ("9.0.0.2711 - Internet Mail only" in Help>About)

View>Toolbar gives 'Standard','Advanced','Web'& 'Customize' options only - none seem to have the tool buttons I was expecting.

Is there something missing in my installation?

TIA

Vic

I'm using Outlook 2000 on Exchange 5.5 I get standard, adavanced, remote, web, and customize options.

Maybe this is why. I use Outlook 2000 (9.0.0.2711) - Corporate or Workgroup" option. If you go to Outlook's help menu and type in workgroup then double click on it, it will tell you the difference between the two options as well as some gotchas.

OK, Thanks for that.

But I do not have Exchange Server - we rely on external ISP & POP3.

This sounds a bit like going back to Windows 95. We used the Internet E-mail service then, but did not need Exchange Server.

Any further advice ?

TIA Vic.

Did you change your email configuration to Corporate or Workgroup Option? Since you've got Exchange you could try that. Just watch out the following as stated in Outlook's help:

Fax: Reinstall the fax program for the configuration you use. Microsoft At Work fax is available only for Corporate or Workgroup configuration. The Symantec Fax Starter Edition fax program must be used for the Internet Only configuration.

Contact links: Re-create any links to contacts that come from address books other than your Contacts folder.

Distribution lists: Re-create any addresses in distribution lists that come from address books other than your Contacts folder.

Also "by default, your mail will be delivered to a .pst file on your computer. To change the location of where your mail is delivered do the following: After you add the mail service to your profile, in the Services dialog box, click the Delivery tab, and then select the location where you want new mail to be delivered. "

I don't think you you'll be able to get the remote tool bar unless you use the Corporate or Workgroup Option.

Cheers.

Sorry,

You mis-read. I do NOT have Exchange Server - so I have not tried to change configuration.

Remote mail worked fine in Outlook 97 without Exchange Server. Why do I need it now?

I find it difficult to believe that Bill Gates would allow his products to go backwards.

Oops. Sorry about that. MS did a major overhaul of Outlook in Outlook 2000. Even Outlook 98 had some "enhancements". Since I've never used Remote mail I don't know if this is one of the things they changed, but it wouldn't surprise me.

In my opinion, a lot of Microsoft's so called enhancements actually make the product less efficient. I guess it depends on what you want the likes of Office and Outlook to do for you.

Cheers.
