Exchange 2000, users Outlook 2000/OS W2K...

We have a couple of users who have messages in their InBox that will not delete, open or even move to another folder.

Error messages:

Opening each messages error reads: MicroSoft Outlook "Can't open this item" OK

Deleting: Microsoft Outlook "Unknown Error" OK

Dragging to another folder: Microsoft Outlook "Can't move the items. The item can not be moved. It was either already moved or deleted, or access was denied." OK

Some of these message date back as far as May 2003. I have tried deleting/creating users profiles on their computers hoping that would help - it did not.

Nothing I have done has been successful in removing these messages. If this is an Exchange Server issue does anyone know what we can do to make a clean up run or something? This does not effect all users maybe 3 out of 100 have a couple of messages stuck in their InBox.

Anyone have any ideas?

You could try creating a rule to delete the messages, then run the rule manually. But it sounds like an Outlook profile corruption. Did you try creating new Outlook Profiles or Windows Profiles?

I really appreciate your reply... however, I tried to create a rule (manually, client and server) to delete them - I get a "Rules Error" "can not move the item into the deleted items folder" or I tried creating a rule with the subject line, the rule runs and . ARGH

Also, I deleted their Outlook profile from their computer and added it back. (Through Control Panel - Mail).

Thank you for your help.

beammie,

Check their mailbox size to see if they are over their limit. Right-click Outlook Today, Properties, General Tab, Folder Size button. Note which folders hold the bulk of the items by size from this box. Empty the deleted items folder. Then delete items from those other folders first or items they don't need using the shift+delete key combination, bypassing the deleted items folder. Note they will be permanently deleted at this time. Then close and restart Outlook using one of the startup switches just to ping the server for extra measure: Start, Run, "outlook.exe /cleanfreebusy" (without the quotes).

If still unable to delete them, the Exchange Server Administrator should be able to delete the messages for them.

Hope this helps.

if this is not resolved yet, I get the same thing once in awhile. What I do is on the users client outlook I make sure that the view is setup to only view the inbox, if your user has it set to see the subj and a brief description in the second window pane it will not delete because exchange is trying to open it.
