I am running Outlook 2000 on a workstation with the O/S of 2000. I cannot get Outlook to come up anymore. It just stops resonding. The logo will come up and go away and when crtl+alt+del it is not responding. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried repairing using the CD and even reinstalling using the CD but nothing seems to happen? My next step is to uninstall and reinstall into another directory, but I have experience in the past uninstalling Office and reinstalling will not solve the problem. Does anyone know a complete way to uninstall Office other than using the uninstall feature to make sure all the settings and files are reinstalled fresh and no just install from the PC? Any help on this situation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

AFter what you just described I doubt the problem is Outlook but rather the profile. Have you tried to delete the profile through the Control Panel and then rebuilding it? Or at least see what components are installed in the profile that could be causing a problem. joegz

Do you have personal folders set up in Outlook? I agree with Joegz that it is a profile issue. If you remove the Exchange server and reassociate it that should do the trick. Also if you are using Personal folders those could also cause this type of problem. If the personal folder is located on a network drive it will pull down the entire .pst which can take forever depending on how large the .pst is. One way to avoid this type of problem is remove the pst from the profile and move it to the local hard drive. -Brad

Our email is setup using POP3 server. We are using personal PST files. The file is located on the local drive already. If I delete the profile what kindof other complications could I have? This is a user that travels so kindof difficult to troulbe shoot using their eyes. Thanks.

I have a network of around 15 Outlook 2000 users. All use pst files which are centrally located on a server for backup purposes. Most of the pst files are around 500MB, some approach 1GB (we are an information intensive company!). No problems, Outlook opens just as quickly as when the files were local. However, searches and other operations such as moving mails from folder to folder take a little longer (although none of my users have complained, so its not really significant), but its worth it for the security of having the pst files on a raid and backup system.

What is the size of the PST? Outlook 2000 has a built-in repair tool that attempts to repair PST's during startup when it has logged an error. When this happens, it can take several minutes for it to open depending on the size of the PST (I've seen it take as long as 40 minutes with a 600MB PST). Doing a CTRL-ALT-DEL will always show that's it's not responding which is a false indication.

First suggestion is to be patient. Open Outlook, take a break, grab a cup of coffee, and let it sit for a half hour. If the hard drive LED is active, then you know Outlook is responding...

Once the repair is made, it shouldn't do that the next time you open it. You can also try manually making the repair with the Inbox Repair Tool under Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Inbox Repair Tool. ~cdogg

hey Cdog,

What I noticed about this "built-in repair" feature you mentioned is that after running the inbox repair tool and finding NO errors on the pst files, We would then have to open the pst file from another client or from a new outlook profile on the same client and it would go through this proccess you witnessed. We would know it was working because the hard-drive light would come on constantly until it is finished and then the pst would open. However; the proccess seemed more like a re-indexing of the pst by the outlook profile then a repair??

Do you have any information on this "repair" or re-indexing by outlook?

I could not find anything on the subject.

Any other thoughts??
TIA

exchanger,

Yeah, I'm just as perplexed as you when it comes to this. I'm not sure if it's just re-indexing or actually performing a repair similar to what the Inbox Repair Tool does.

I used to work for a company that worked directly with Microsoft Engineers when it came to Outlook 2000 (mainly because we supported over 15,000 users). Through support documents that were handed down the food chain, we were trained that it was making some kind of repair but never given any specific details. I always assumed it was a basic repair that would ultimately go to the IRT if it was too complicated.
