Is it possible to have outlook 2000 as a client for Exchange 2000 when accessing email from a remote location.

Yes, it's possible. Just add new service in Outlook 2000 -"Internet mail service" and configure smtp and pop3 server parameters for this service regarding your Exchange parameters.
