Outgoing SMTP connectors - best practice

Hi,
I have 4 different sites, each with 1 exchange server and 1 sendmail relay. The 4 exchange servers are all tied together via site VPN, but the relays are not.

What is the best practice in such a situation with regard to outgoing internet mail and SMTP connectors? Right now, all 4 exchange servers are in the same routing group, and there is an SMTP connector for each sendmail relay in that routing group also.

The setup works fine, because there is redundancy in case one relay goes down or is overloaded. However, the downside is that we can't control the fact that each exchange server should prefer its own local sendmail relay. The exchange servers seem to be sending mail out through the SMTP connectors randomly.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

thanks!
