We have an exchange server (Exchange 2003 Standard)in our parent domain and another exchange server in our child domain, which is physically apart. (We have a WAN link between the domains)

All outgoing external email currently flows out of our firewall in the parent domain. Is it possible to send outgoing email from the child domain users directly through their gateway/firewall in the child domain instead of going all the way back to the parent ?

I don't see any reason why not. If the gateway is correctly configured on the Exchange box, it should go out fine. Just make sure you have reverse DNS entries for any public IP address that will be sending email.

We added a new SMTP connector and that took care of the problem. Even if the Gateway if entered correctly, we have to create a new SMTP connector. (as per Microsoft)
