I am a new Exchange administrator and have been monitoring our outbound queue, messages waiting to be delivered. One thing I have noticed that I can't find information on is in the originator field, instead of a user name, I see this symbol <>. What does that mean? Am I being used as a relay?

I have observed the same behavior/messages in my systems, in the Outbound queue that are From: <>, even the Mail Relay Testing confirms "Relaying is prohibited". Here is what I learned:

These emails in the outbound queue are most likely generated from the system administrator (postmaster). When the system gets a message off the internet and is unable to resolve the name it sends a message back to the message sender notifying them that the user is unknown. When the system tries to send a message back to the message originator it gets stuck in the outbound queue because like most spam the reply address is bogus.

I don't know why the originator is blank <>, instead of System Administrator, only assume that it is a default set up in the MS Exchange Server, which shall be addressed later on.

I may be wrong on this. Welcome comments. It's not about whether you can do it or not, it's about HOW

Digging a little deeper, I discovered that Exchange does not have a default mailbox for postmaster, that is why the originator is blank. I am going to create a mailbox for postmaster, and let it handle the notifications, to see if the originator is still blank in Outbound queue.

Any comments ? It's not about whether you can do it or not, it's about HOW
