I am having an issue with Out of office assistant while using Exchange 2003. It will work with internal e-mail but not with external e-mail.

If I remeber correctly with exchange 5.5 there was a setting somewhere that you had to change to allow the assistant to reply to outside e-mials.

If anyone has any ideas it would be a big help.

maybe this will help?

edit or make a new policy for a smtp doamin:
In Exchange System Manager, expand Global Settings, right-click Internet Message Formats, point to New, and then click Domain.

READ THIS:!!!!
Creating a Policy for a New SMTP Domain
In addition to modifying the policy for the * domain, you can create other policies for specific SMTP domains. For example, you want to communicate with a business partner who has an SMTP domain named contoso.com, and you want to allow out-of-office replies to be sent to this domain, but not to other external domains. You can create a new policy for the contoso.com domain that does exactly that. Because Exchange uses the SMTP policy that most closely matches the SMTP domain, all messages sent to Contoso users use the policy for the Contoso domain, but messages sent to any other SMTP domain use the default policy for the * domain.

I had this same exact problem about 2 months ago. The “Only” way I was able to fix this problem was to install a special Hot Fix Patch from Microsoft. This patch was not available publicly on any of their websites. I had to call MS tech support and one of their techs emailed the patch to me directly. He said that this particular problem with “Out of Office” replies is a known “issue” with Exchange 2003. He said some Exchange 2003 servers experience it and others don’t. It’s definitely more common if you are running a mixed environment, Exchange 5.5 and 2003 servers together.

I hope this helps…
