i'm just installed oracle personal 8.1.6, in my windows 98 standalone system. and i can't connect to the host. after installation i try to use sql plus with scott and tiger but its prompt an error "ORA-12560:TNS: protocol adapter error". what is that mean? and how can i solve that? by the way is there any site that i can refer for the step by step installation???

My guess would be that your TNSListener task is not running. It's been a while since I installed and worked with Personal Oracle on Windows 98, but unlike in Windows NT-2000 (where the tasks are set up as services), the database task and the TNSListener task don't come up automatically.

Here is a link to some Personal Oracle documentation at the Oracle Technet Site (requires a registration to access, but it is free):

yeah i guess you are right jee..i try to install and re-install for few times... i try to Net8 configuration assitant to try everything out at the end when i test the connection, it say that TNS: no listener... so do i really get what i need in the oracle documentation?

Have you tried to start the listener? Instructions are included in the Administrator's Guide (link in previous post).

At a command prompt:

LSNRCTL START <listener-name>
LSNRCTL> EXIT

The listener name is probably something like TNSLSNR, but you should have either entered a name or you were told the name during the install process.

i am not sure, in the end of the installation process, for the listener text box i use the default that is "LISTENER" that mean my listener can be "LISTENER", am i right? but then, what about the configuration for the local service name or the directory service name???
