Hi,

I thought I'd start a bit of a debate about images, with a few questions. I just wanted to get feedback from you guys on what you think about images, file sizes and loading times..

1: What would you consider to be an optimum file size for a image on the web? (I know this is kind of dictated by it's dimensions and intended application)..

2: What would you consider to be too large in regards to file size and load times? I'd consider that anything over 25kb is a bit too big if you want the site to load quickly..

3: How long is too long for a page to load? How long do most users wait before getting bored? Is 15-20 seconds ok or is the tolerance longer before the user just clicks off?

What's your thoughts?

Cheers,

Paul @ basepoint designz..

well i believe image size is directly relevant to what else is on the page. if its a large image but the only image then you might be ok.

also you underestimate the average surfer. probably 7 -8 second load time is max. (preloaders obviously extend that time, people want to know whats going on)

rule of thubm...depneds:
on the site...who is visiting....wht speed they have...what speed your host has....but in general use images to attract users rather than "color your pages"
with a bit of table properties, CSS and a few images u can achive the same look while cutting down on No. of images use /hense the load time.
I would say anywhere fromm 75-85% of optimization of the original image would do. Also, some images you would want to remain in it 100% quality eg. your logo.......depnds on your site...if ur a 'design and print' company then obvisly u would want the max quality but light content of the page....
take a look at my never ending-work-in-procees :-)
to get some ideas of slicing images,CSS use etc.

Alll the best!

A study I have that is two years old states users will wait 12-13 seconds before clicking off - as long as they can see something loading, i.e., progress. That was for users on dial up modems who are used to the wait. I suspect there is less patience now. I try to keep my pages under 40k which keeps the load time reasonable for the vast majority of users.

However, the depends on the site's target demographic.
