Running Office XP, Outlook 2002, Service Pack 3, Exchange Server 5.5 on Windows XP Client Machine.

I receive an email with an attachment, lets say an excel spreadsheet. I open the attachment via the email, it loads say excel and the file opens. I make a few changes, enter a few figures in a couple of cells. Click save then exit excel. I close the email which is still on the screen, as I close a message says do you wish to save changes which is the change I made to the excel file. I say yes. Then a message appears saying "operation failed" I have to click OK to the message, I then loose the changes I made as I have to say no to the save message dialog.

If I save the attachment from the email, open excel manually and load the file, save changes then create a new email and attach the updated excel file I have no problems.

Some users at work do not have the problem but most of the users do. Users like the easy option of opening attachments from email making changes then resaving. But I cannot for the life of me work out why some users are able to do this and others not.

Anyone else come across this problem, or have any ideas?? I did have a look at a Technet document on operation failed but it releates to a different problem causing the error message. HELP!

I guess the mail is on the mailbox on the Exchange server?
Make sure all rights are in place so the users saving a message have the needed permissions to modify and change messages.
