operating system not found

I have a compaq presario 5477. i am receiving an intermittent problem at boot up. I receive the error message "operating system not found on any devices". i changed the ide cable to the hard drive and made sure its snug. any other suggestions.

the hard drive intermittenly works.
when it doesn't work the bios cannot recognize it.

It sounds as if the Hard drive is bad. Do you have another? If so replace the bad one. If you can get it to boot and work long enough to pull over data that could help your cause. James Collins
