Operating System compatibility of Quark 4.1

Hello, Marcus! You actually answered an Illustrator question for me a couple of weeks ago.
Well, I'm still at it. Our company has purchased for their marketing department (ME)the full Adobe CS Suite (the PDF function is fantastic, seeing that most of our internal flyers are PDFs.) I've pursuaded our typesetter (the one with the antiquated pre press RIP equipment) to consider purchasing the same stuff so we're more compatible in what we do. Unfortunately, she's still running OS 9.2 and quark 4.1 (she's got quark 5.0, but she says it won't output negatives so she doesn't use it). Most of her work is in Quark 4.1 that she will need to access and update quickly. Hence, our problem. The newer Adobe desktop publishing software for MAC is only compatible with OS X.
The Adobe upgrade for our typesetter could be money down the drain if she can't work with her existing files. Ummmmm, the simple answer would be to convert all the Quark stuff to InDesign, but we don't know if InDesign is compatible with her old RIP (and I simply dread the learning curve).
Any thoughts? Unfortunately, the RIP/imagesetter won't be upgraded anytime soon.

You are correct, the new Abobe stuff is not compatible with OS9.
She can still run all of her old software under 0SX "classic mode".
(she may also have to buy the latest suitcase, or whatever font program she uses).
when it comes to PDF's and RIPs then...
her RIP has to be compatable with Postscript Level 3 if you want to take advantage of the cool new features in InDesign CS and I think Quark 6, because Acrobat 6 can handle Level 3.
If not, then all you have to do is distill the .PS file in Distiller 6 but make a new job setting for "Acrobat 4 compatible", if that make sence??

I guess you could call it a "pre-press" house. She's a lone typesetter that outputs all forms and some low level marketing materials for the bank. She's set up with a G4 and an antiquated imagesetter array that only speaks in PS Level 1.
The cost to upgrade to even a refurbished imagesetter system/RIP may not seem profitable; the analysts are debating whether the $15,000 (USD) cost is justifiable, or if it's more efficents simply have all negatives outsourced.
We have our own small print shop, by the way.

Yeah, that's right, I remember you now....
Just make sure your PDF's are compatible to Acrobat 3 or 4 and you shouldn't have any problems

Thanks for the info on PDF versions. It just so happens that we were talking to our film/negative printer yesterday about PDF compatibility. He said something about "you'll need to make it a PDF that's a much older version of Acrobat than you think".
