Known bug in Excel 2007 on Windows XP when opening .xls files, where double-clicking on a file launches Excel but it hangs and users find that minimizing then restoring Excel causes the file to open. A Kb article recommends unchecking a box in Excel Options... "Ignore other applications...", but it's probably already unchecked.

Here is a fix and it's simple: Install an add-in.

Excel Options > Add-ins.
Manage: Add-ins, click Go.
Check an add-in, perhaps Solver, OK your way out. Close and re-open Excel.
