Hi,

Some of my acquaintances have problem.
When they opened some Word documents on client PCs, message below pop up.

"Outlook is retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange
Server "(server name)". You can cancel the request or minimize
this message to the Windows taskbar until Outlook closes
the message automatically." (in Japanese)

At the time this message appeared, the ExchangeServer was powered-offfor maintenance. So it's natural that the message pops up if they were using Outlook on their client PC.

But the users who saw this message didn't use Outlook at the timeon their client PCs.
(They knew the ExchangeServer wasn't available that day.)

I asked them, "Didn't you really use Outlook at the time?"
The answer was "No."

Client PC
OS:WindowsXP sp1 , OfficeXP (Outlook2002 , Word2002)

We thought and imagined the reasons as below:
* The message above is related to Outlook & ExchangeServer.
* Word2002 may use some of the modules on Outlook2002.
* The documents might be in PublicFolder in the past.
* There might some events.(I didn't check the event log yet.)

I couldn't find any solutions about this phenomenom
on the web so far.

Thanks a lot for your help

Myncle: First, I want to commend you. Your ability to make us understand in english is EXCELLENT. I have read posts by people who use english as their first language and not understood it nearly so well. :)

Please check the following, but I don't know if it will help or not:

1) Check Word's startup folder. There could be a file in there that wants to access the Exchange Server. Startup folder is c:\...office\startup

2) Check normal.dot for macros. Open Word, hit Alt+F11. Anything in code window when you double-click ThisDocument or NewMacros under Normal tree?

You can always try Word troubleshooting. It will not hurt. Please read all the troubleshooting instructions:

Good luck!

By the way, please excuse me for my delayed response, because of time difference between the USA and Japan.
It's 10o'clock in the morning in Tokyo, but perhaps 7 or 8o'clock in the evening in the United States, isn't it?

I'd like to send my best regards to you two.
Thank you very much again.

Many thanks, Anne Troy sama

I asked them to check event log, but no related event recorded in log files.

Then, they checked
1) Word's startup folder
2) normal.dot for macros.
but nothing there.

I didn't ask if they set Word as e-mail editor or not.

Regards
