When opening an email in Outlook, connected to exchange 5.5 if that is relevant, it opens the top email to if this one has not been opened. I have no idea why and have checked for viruses and spyware

Do you mean the top e-mail opens in the preview pane or both e-mails open at the same time?

They will both open, teh one u choose wherever it is on the list and the top one also.
