I have a read-only spreadsheet on a fileserver that multiple users can access but cannot make changes or delete. But whenever I make changes to it, or someone else opens it as read-only... a blank text file is created on the same fileshare with a weird filename (filename example F2B0050). The file size is the same as the original but when I open it - it's blank.

Why does this occur?

Does the file disappear when you close the read-only file?

Are there any macros in the file?

Thanks for your reply. I have been away from this forum for awhile so I apologize for not reading your response earlier.

No actually it does not disappear. It is actually creating duplicates of the same master spreadsheet every time I make an update. So if I make 9 changes to the master doc, at the end of the day, I will have 9 copies but they are named differently..OB60080, 4F9A700, etc.

Actually, I think I figured it out. Had to do with NTFS permissions (Modify rights). Once modify rights on the file server were granted to the user who is updating the file, temp docs automatically deleted and disappeared.

Thanks.
