We have obtained an Access database from a client but we/they do not have the user-name/password to open the database up. All we need to do is open it for data retrieval rather than addition/editing.
Is there any way around this ?
Thanks in advance
Steve

It depends on how well the security model was set up.

If the security was set up properly - then NO.

However, here are a few back doos that people often forget to close down.

1) Try holding the Shift key down as you open the database.

2) Open a new database and in the File menu, Get External Data, Import
Then select the database you are talking about and Import all of the Tables, Queries, Forms, Reports, Modules.
You then have a fully working copy of the database without the security

3) Open Open a new database and in the File menu, Get External Data, Link Tables ...
Then select the database you are talking about and Link all of the tables.
You then have access to the data and can develop queries to extract the data into new tables in your own database if you need to

4) In another database open recordsets on the tables in the other database ( this one assumes that you know the names of the tables in the target ) then extract the data and write to local tables of your own.

5) I believe that there are commercial organistations that can take locked Acess97 or older version databases and extract the data - AT A COST.

'ope-that-'elps.

Still no luck here.
It's an Access 97 database.
When I try and open the database, be it in Access itself or through an ODBC connection I get the message "You don't have the permissions to use the 'C:\FilePath\Database.mdb' object. Have your system administrator or the person who created this object establish the appropriate permissions for you."
I get the same error if I attempt to access the data through an ODBC connection - "You do not have the necessary permissions to use the (unknown) object. Have your system administrator or the person who created this object establish the appropriate permissions for you."
We also have a 'Microsoft Access Workgroup Information' file - should I be making use of this file ? I've tried setting the path to it in the 'System Database' part of the ODBC connection creation.
I've had a (non-work) colleague look at cracking open the database using a 'utility' he has for forgetful people who lose passwords - but he claims that there is no password (or at least the password is blank) for the database in question.
I'll admit that I'm new to Access so might be missing something obvious here ...
Any further pointers would be appreciated. :)
Thanks again ...
Steve

It sounds like your dB has been set up properly to use work group security. This is highly effective at keeping your data secure!
If this data is vital, it looks like you will have to resort to the companies who do this for a living. The company I have heard the most about are

Best of luck
