open word doc using word from FTP server

I hope someone can help me. Using MS word I can choose save and from the pull down menu choose an FTP server to save to. This works fine. When, however I try to open the file from word(pointing to the FTP server) to edit it, I just get an error saying it can't open the file. It works from a web browser but I would like to be able to do everything from within word. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Would you not, when you save to the FTP server, be actually saving a disk file to a hard drive? Does the FTP server also act as a File and Print server? The fact that it is a FTP server means nothing to Word.

Forget the fact that I can save since that works fine. What I would like to be able to do is connect to an FTP server (over the internet) that is set up with "isolated users" from MS word and open a file stored on that server. When I do this with an anonymous user It works just fine. I can open it edit it and save it back to the server. When I try using one of the isolated users, I can connect and see the word documents. I just can't open them. the system just times out and says it can't open the file. I checked the permissions on the isolated user folders and they are the same for anonymous. I can't figure out why it works for one and not any of the others.

I discovered it was the syntax I was using to log on to the ftp server. The instructions to use isolated users says to logon with the syntax domain\user. This worked with the exception of the problem mentioned above. When I just used the user name, It worked completely. Thanks Gerry for responding.
