Okay, I have potentially a bad slot on a two carrier system. I know in all of the training classes they said you shouldn't run the Magix with an open slot. I have plenty of room in the second carrier and thought in order to quickly solve my problem I could move the module (412 TDL)to the next available slot, board renumber and then reprogram. Swapping the carrier would be easiest but customers, money, and time is in the mix. Let me know if it is a myth or reality about the empty slot theory!!!

As far as I know - the system will not recognize any of the boards after the empty slot.

And that is what I thought as well but hey...seems we can always do things that someone tells us we can't do. Thanks for the time confirmation.

Guidelines 2

Follow these guidelines when you install modules.

Do not leave empty slots between modules. The system ignores modules installed beyond any empty slot.

If a phantom module (a programmed empty slot) is indicated on the Control Unit Diagram, make sure the slot remains empty and do not install any modules to the right of it. The system ignores any modules installed to the right of a programmed empty slot.

Remove a blank panel from a slot by prying up the latch at the bottom of the panel with a flat bladed screwdriver.

Make sure you install each module in its assigned slot. If you install a module in the wrong slot, the system will not function properly.

Once you have installed the power supply and the processor in the basic carrier, use the
remaining slots for the modules as follows:
— Basic carrier: slots 1 through 5
— First expansion carrier: slots 6 through 11
— Second expansion carrier: slots 12 through 17

This is staight out of the manual.

I am certainly glad that you had so much free time to look up something that I pretty much said I already knew and was simply looking to see if any of my more informed colleagues had ever experimented with open slotting and how did it work out. As far as straight out of the manual...well as we all know that sometimes the maual isn't always the best place to get your programming information. But I do appreciate your assistance with my issue.

Cant you just program a phantom module to the bad slot in surrogate mode and move the 412 TDL to a good slot? It would screw up your exts \ trunk #s but it should work just fine it will make the system think that there is something in the bad slot. I have done this once before but it was a temporary solution.

Well, you say it is a BAD SLOT.

How bad is it?

What you can do, if that slot can recognize a board installed into it, you can put a board in and then BUSY IT OUT.

I actually had to do that 'cause I had a bad board on site, with no spares.

Once a REAL BOARD is installed into that slot and busied out, then you can install boards to the right of it.

JUST DO NOT DO A BOARD RENUMBER.

IF the slot truely is bad, I'm afraid I would tell the customer I can not guarantee my work until/unless they replace the defective carrier.

A new carrier is on its way to the site as we speak. They (the customer) finally understood the problems that could arise from cheaping out (of course finding out the carrier was less than a $100 bucks didn't hurt)!

I had a card go down & lock up a Magix in a 3 carrier system. I had to remove the card & try it. Everything worked fine past the emty slot. & for a week too.
