I formated my hard drive to clean install w98 and I only have my upgrade cd. I upgraded from 3.1 so long ago and now I can't all find the disks. I found the first setup disk from 3.1 and now Windows is asking for the second one which I can't find. I even tried to put in the w2k disk FE but that didn't help. Is there anyway around this?
Is there a place that I could get the 3.1 setup disks?

The upgrade cd should still allow you to do a full install. The difference between the "upgrade" cd and the "full version" is that the upgrade cd doesn't come with the Windows keycode. You'll need to obtain the one from Windows 3.1 you had installed or contact Microsoft for one.

what is a key code? why can't I get it off the 2000 cd? Microsoft Works - The Ultimate Oxymoron

The upgrade still needs a code key. It should be on the
back of the Windows case. If you have a fromated disk
with the system files you should be able to have upgrade
search it for the op system. Or use it to fromat your
HD with the /s. The first time that you upgraded did
toy make a Startup Disk ?

Whenever you install Windows, it always asks you for key code to proceed with the installation. The only key codes that the Win98 upgrade cd will take are from previous versions of Windows (Win95, Win3.1, etc) and not Win2K.

I can't believe you don't recall ever seeing a prompt for a key code before!! %-)

Ummm, the easy way:
1) get the computer booted into dos with CD drivers
2) type d:setup where d is the drive letter of cdrom
3) go through the setup, until it comes to an upgrade check, where it asks for proof of a previous version.
4) remove win98 upgrade cd, insert a cd of previous version of windows.
5) in the box, type d: where d is the cdrom
6) after it completes, read the message. It should say to reinsert win 98 upgrade cd. Do it.
7) continue installation. When finished, you will have the full version of win98 installed on pc
