One OS fails to boot in multi-boot system

This multi-boot system has three XP Home SP1 OSs plus Recovery Console.
One OS has stopped "booting up" for whatever reason, it stalls at the second Windows screen.

The following actions have been tried without success.

1 Chkdsk /r and defrag
2 Last good known system
3 Safe Mode
4 Debug and Fixboot as per Doug Knox Boot Loader repair instructions.

I have looked through the various recovery console commands, but cannot find anything else that might help in repairing the non-booting OS.

I would be grateful for any suggestions for repair, otherwise it will be a format and clean instal.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

If that doesn't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Thank you very much. I have printed off the first thread and will let you know the results when I have tried it out. The problem is on my friend's computer, it will be some time in the coming week before we can have another go at fixing it.

There are really 3 versions of XP Home on the same machine?
Are they on separate hard drives, primary partitions, logical drives in extended partition?

one thing to make sure.. when running chkdsk /r, make sure it is running on the correct drive.

Not sure how the partitions are setup since we don't know if they are all on the same drive or not.

The partitions are all on the same drive, I did double check that we ran chkdsk /r on the partion with the sick OS.
