I am a on site technician who is looking at getting some certifications to beef up my resume and possibly get into a higher paying job with less travel.

I currently work about 50 hours a week and I am forced to travel quite a bit. I don't have a computer science degree but I am a very good technician. Most regular college courses won't work for me because there is no guarentee that I will be in town to attend class. I am looking at getting my cisco certificaion from a place on line.

Do these places or places like this hold any water when it comes to certifications? Or will something like this be a waste of time and money? My gut feeling tells me that if I can pass the exams I am off to a bigger and better future even without a CS degree but I am a little skeptical on training for some of these certifications on line.

If anyone has any thoughts or comments on this matter let me know.

i bought some used 2500 series routers and two 1900 series switches on ebay and the ccna study guide. the whole shooting match cost about 650 bucks. i was able to study when i wanted and what i wanted. and i still have the equipment that i use in a testlab.

the more you play with the routers, the better you get...

just what worked for me

I agree with buddafish -- there's no substitute for hands-on learning. Lots of travel makes it hard, but you can take the study guide with you, and work with the hardware whenever you're in town.

I would assume that you have taken courses like these and have already been certified. Have you noticed a difference in your career? Has it boosted your career? More importantly in your wallet?

The certification question has been beat to death and then some. Your answers to this question, here, will be based on opinion. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions. If you want to see answers to this same question, just search in this forum and read them.

Hopefully, people will stop asking this question!

Online classes are no different than classroom classes. They both depend on the quality of the material and how well it's presented. There are good and bad in both arenas.

As kHz said, the value of certs (and degrees for that matter) has been beaten to death and you can look for plenty of prior reading material here. Basically, some employers value them while others do not. There really aren't any generalities, it all depends on the current job market in your particular location.

The future is already here - it's just not widely distributed yet...
