I have an older version of winzip from before I upgraded from win98. It was never registered and I was using the evaluation version. I know that winzip comes free with Windows XP, is there a way to get it to stop asking me to register, or can I register it wil the winxp registration or something?

I've never heard that, though I could be wrong. Starting with ME, Windows has zip compatibility, but the winzip program is still separate and not free.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

XP natively can unzip a file, but that has nothing to do with WinZip, a third party program. XP has no free license for WinZip.

If you want the latest and more secure version of Winzip go to their site. The current version is WinZip 9.0 SR-1 and it costs $29. They're such a nice "mob" that they may allow you another evaluation download too.

If you install Winzip, consider disabling the native XP zip facility. This will speed up explorer:

Start, Run, regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

I didn't realize that Winzip wasn't the native XP unzipper, how do I set it so that the XP unzipper is the default? When I right click on a .zip file, the only program that it has in the list of Open With... menu is Winzip, what is the XP one called?
