Microsoft identified a problem with Outlook 2002 where embedded objects [word docs, pictures, etc.] can not be opened when the message is in Rich Text Format. It's documented in Q281046 at
I have been unable to use their workaround. I get the same results. RTF and in-line attachments were our company standards so I have been unable to open any of the attachments in those messages.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Try this.....

Go to folder options and look for the file association for the file type you are trying to open. Edit the OPEN action. In the "Application used to perform Action" window, go to the far right side. Put "%1" (include quotes)at the end for the line. Look directly below that window, clear the check form the USE DDE option. Click OK, OK, close. Then try to open the file from outlook.

I have used this before for several different file types.

Thanks for the response otascret.

This happens with every file type that is embedded in an RTF email. Even right-clicking and trying to save the attachment gets the same error.

I tried what you suggested with a Word document but it did not help. The result was the same. I don't think it is the associations since they work fine in all other cases. It is only when they are embedded in RTF.

Thanks anyway.
