Okay, last question for the day (group headers)

I've got two group headers on two different level breaks. Everything's fine, except the child (lowest-level) group header will print on the bottom of a page when there's not enough room to print one row of detail data. I'd like it to just go to the next page in this circumstance.

I thought the "keep together" property would prevent this, so that if there wasn't enough room to print any data it would just go to the next page and print the header along with detail information (I don't want each grouping to start on a new page every time). It just looks ugly having a group header at the bottom of the page all by itself (typically, I have 3-4 groupings per page).

Any way around this?

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Depends on which Keep Together you used.

Also, please post your software version.

If you right click the group and select change group you'll either see the group together, or you may need to select the options to see it, once that is selected the grouping should perform as you'd like.

It's not done on the section that the group is in, it's part of the group's formatting.

Hmm... I've tried every combination of [change group]/[section expert] and it's still not working right.

I either get only one grouping per page, or a group heading by itself on the bottom of the page.

Any other ideas?

Not sure why you're using the section expert, that's not what I advised.

If you use the GROUP Keep Together, Crystal will groups to the next page if there isn't room.

If you want to be able to control it more tightly than that, you'll need to keep track of every row, which is a pain.

Are you aware of the Repeat Group Header on each page?

Perhaps that will be more to your liking.

Yeah, I've tried that. Change Group -> Options -> Keep Group Together. Different from Report -> Section Expert.

Problem is, it won't take advantage of leftover space from the previous group. ie: print the header, on or two detail lines, go to next page, print the header again, and a few more detail lines.

Instead, it skips to the next page (leaving a good half-page of space), and begins printing the header and then detail records.

I've had both versions of KGT turned off and on, and toggled between the two. I either get a header at the bottom of the page w/ no records, or half a page blank with the next group on a new page (my detail line is about 1/2" wide, so it's not a matter of not having enough space to print the header and a couple of detail lines on the previous page).

The faux header sounds like what you're after then, read the whitepaper referenced in mastermike's posting.
