Okay, I know this one has been asked alot but I can not seem to find one that exactly fits my issue. I am trying to network an XPpro to a 98SE. The two computer are connected to a Hub that is connected to a router that connects to my cable modem. I setup the MACaddress from my XP machine on the router and both my computers are able to use the internet at the same time. I have already used home networking setup on XP and have given both computers the same workgroup and no password. I tried to use a network wizzard disk that I created on the XP to run on the 98 but it will not recognize the operation, ie errors out. Now I have been able to get the network to work to the point that the 98SE sees that printers and all shared folders on the XP and can access and replace them. But on the XP I can not see the 98 machine. Also the 98 machine is not allowing me to setup shared folders for my documents on 98SE. I am just at the last step of trying to get the XP to see the 98 and being able to share my 98 files.

Thanks,
Tim

You are almost there.

No firewalls on either machine.

1. Add passwords for all users, both XP and Win98 machines. It is easy enough even with passords to have the machines Autologon and start. But passwords.

2. For all the defined users on Computer A, make them users with identical username and passwords on Computer B. For all the users on Computer B, make them users with identical username and passwords on Computer A.

3. There are alternative ways to solve this issue, but this is decidedly the easiest. See:

I do have a firewall application on the XP box but usually it ask if I want to allow communications.

You can use, and should, the firewall application on the XP machine.

Just get your local LAN sorted first,

Then, with the firewall treat your local LAN as a "Trusted" Zone.

I agree with bcastner.
Make sure you put the same users on both sides with permission and you shosuld be able to see the entire network

Thanks, I did all kinds of setups with password and users but all said and done. I was later able to delete the passwords and the link stayed. The firewall had no problem after reboot. That is strange that I had to do all those things and then could change things back to get the network to work.
