I ended up with 2 installs of XP on my computer (???!!!) Is it possible to uninstall one version of XP without affecting the other correct install?

when u say 2 install what do u mean by that. Cause as far as i know u can only install two in separate drive and it that's the case just format the darn drive and for boot screen edit BOOT.INI and delete the entry u don't want

I mean at the boot screen it looks like I have a dual boot, however, both choices are XP. I also have 2 WINNT folders on my C drive. Re-formatting is undesirable because of the other "stuff" on that drive, but so is the message that I am running out of disk space on my hard drive.

I don't know if it works the same for XP, which is what I'm running now, but a while back I ended up with two identical instances of Win2k on a single partition. I installed the second one because doing that was easier than the messy process fixing the old one would have been. All I had to do was delete the windows folder. Both of the boots relied on the system and system32 files so laeve those alone unless you really know what you're doing. Delete the WinNT folder that you don't want(you can only delete the one that you aren't booted into). That's my best advice. MYenigmaSELF

I didn't think of this before, and it depends on hard drive space/partitioning, but you might want to consider partitioning your drive and putting everything you want to keep on the non-bootable partition. Then reformat the partition that has XP on it. It might take some more time but it's a lot cleaner in the end. It's actually what I ended up doing when I made the switch from Win2k to XP. Good luck! I believe part of the problem is that her hard drive isn't partitioned. And partitioning a hard drive that has little/no space left on it can be very tricky. So deleting one WinNT directory to get some space before you try to partition would be a good idea. Win2k has excellent partition tools built into the OS, so I would assume XP does as well. Although I use professional versions. It might be different if you have the desktop version or home version of XP. If so there are tons of tools out there to partition, but not many that I can think of that partition in NTFS, so I would recomment getting a name brand ilke Partition Magic. Make sure it's NTFS compliant. Once again, good luck. MYenigmaSELF

To myenigmaself: Yes, my hard drive is partitioned (and I have XP pro) but that just seems to confuse me, even though I know it should be a useful tool. OK, Gentlethunder, you big lug! I CAN do that, but it seems that everytime I move things from one drive to another I lose the link to my programs and I have to re-install them again. So, the only solution I ever need to know is "Wipe it clean, re-format and re-install???!!!" P.S. Old people have feelings too, you know.

I don't know if I said this already, but I have two hard drives. This is basicly the same as having one hard drive with two partitions. As a general rule I install all programs on one drive and store all data on the other. That's just for future reference. And wiping, re-formatting, and re-installing isn't always a bad thing. It cleans up things and generaly makes your computer run faster. And the rule of separating data from software makes the process very simple. Restoring software is a lot easier than backing up data. But if performance isn't a huge issue then by all means just delete one of the WINNT folders(make sure it's not the one you're using). Or possibly get another hard drive if you just need more space. I hope some of this is helpful. MYenigmaSELF
