Alright, i have read the post below... but it still leaves me a little confused as to how i am supposed to network a 2kpro and a 98 machine. The 2kpro is the server, 98 the client. I want to use ICS and file and print sharing. Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions on how to set it up?

if networking with ICS confuses you, and you have a little bit of money to throw around, I would really recomend getting something like an Asante FriendlyNet Cable/DSL Router, unless of course you are on dialup.

The reason I sugest a router, is because it's rather easy , both machines just basically have to be setup for DHCP (auto get IP) , and you can throw them on the same workgroup and such since the router also acts as a Hub, gateway and firewall.

just plug them in , boot em up, and go. The downside is that it cost about 150 for the Asante router that I got with a Backup modem port (the router will allow you to dialup via an external modem if for some reason your cable connection dies)

Also performance wise will be greatly increased, using another machine to share the internet runs into a slew of problems as well as a big performance hit.

if I find any documentation on ICS in the meantime I'll let you know. Because the only other way I can think of is to setup the Win2k machine as a gateway and setup Win98 gateway setting to point to the win2k machine. Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}

hmm.. Ok, yes i am going through a dialup. I want to set up DHCP. But how do i set the settings on each computer to "talk", share the internet?

I want the 98 box to have access to a 1gig fat32 partition on the 2kpro box. i want the 2kpro box to share a printer that is connected to the 98box. And i want the 98 box to share the internet with the 2kpro box.

Well basically see if you can get a normal network going first, basically both machines must have NIC(network interface cards) , typically a 10/100 Ethernet card, also I recomend a HUB , since otherwise you'll have to cross the cables yourself. plug both machiens into the hub, set them both on the same workgroup (also both nic cards should be the same, but should matter if they are autodetect) , DHCP and such not really required since they can use their internal IP, but you can set one manually such as
10.0.0.1 for the Win2k
and 10.0.0.2 for the 98 machine

once you got the workgroups, and such, also on the win2k machine in user management under computer managment you have to enable the Guest account.

this way the Win98 will be able to see your printer or any other shared device for that matter, (you can enable file/print sharing from the network control pannel, but for drive sharing just right click the drive, and click sharing, and say share as If its a $C type of share, you need to add a new share ($drive is for debug/administrative purpose)

on the 98 machine, if you setup a new printer, say it's a network printer, and find it on the win2k machine (print sharing must be enabled on the win2k machine)

I think once you have that setup, ICS should have instructions to take the next step. I dont have the details on ICS from dialup since I am more than likely using a router. Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}

Also check online at places like there is a small application, starts with an a , I forget its name, but it's a proxy server, which will basically allow you to to do some internet access through that machine, which worked just great in the past for me, you jsut setup IE to go thru a proxy server, and point it to your win2k machine where the little application is running.
