'offline files status' message keeps appearing in the system tray letting me know that I am working offline, even though i'm currently online. The only way to resolve this (and be able to access my network drives) is to right click the icon and click synchronise. This problems happens approximately once an hour.

This problem has happened since loading XP SP2.

Any ideas?

XP SP2 is much tougher than pre-SP2 about line quality. As a first stab at the issue, try adjusting the "slow speed" thresholds under Group Policy.

In addition, many network adapter manufacturers have issue post-SP2 driver revisions for the LAN adapters. Look to the web site of the computer manufacturer for an upgrade to the adapter.

As just anecdotal evidence, most users reporting this issue discovered a problem that was revealed by SP2 in their physical cable plant that was "hidden" under XP SP1x.

Thanks for your advice, i went into the registry, and couldn't find the "GoOfflineOnSlowLink" key, so i created a key, where Microsoft say it should be, then, i set the value to "0", which is off.

I've updated the nic to the latest driver from intels web site.

i'm gonna wait and see what happens with this, now i've added the key.

Hi, i've tried the solutions you provided, but still to no avail. I've now removed sp2, and the problem has gone away. I'm going to re-install xp sp2 myself (previously the user done it via automatic updates), as i believe there could have been some kind of corruption, during the installation. Once i've re-installed and tested, i'll let you know how it goes.

After re-installing sp2, the problem appeared resolved. I was logged on for approximately 1 hour, without a fault. But after re-partitioning the c: drive (partition magic), and installing a patch for ACT2000, upon reboot the problem re-surfaced after approximately 5 minutes!
Will remove, and re-install sp2
