Hi all,

I recently installed Office 97 Pro edition on my
computer (Win 98) but am running into problems trying to
add more features using ADD/REMOVE Programs in the
Control Panel.

Upon clicking the "Add/Remove..." button, a setup
initialization error occurs which reads -
"The Setup configuration file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup\Off97Pro.STF' is missing or
corrupted. Try running Setup again from where you
originally ran it."

Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix this?
I did a search on my computer and came up
a file named Off97Pro.000 in my C:\WINDOWS folder.
Obviously I need the file that's missing/corrupted.
Is this file available somewhere?

Thanks in advance for the help. Peace!

Not sure what exactly it is you are trying to add, but if its a component of Office, you need to have the install CD.
I also suggest adding any Office components from the setup program interface rather than the control panel.

Hi Crisc,

Yes I know. I do have it installed. And you are right,
it is a component(s) I'm trying to add.

I still get that message though. Have you experienced this
before? Thanks in advance for the help. Peace!

I too have experienced problems when installing office 97
Maybe not the best solution, but the quickest was to first uninstall the whole thing and then reinstall with all the desired components. Use the install option that comes up when the disk auto runs, not the add/remove in control panel.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup\Off97Pro.STF doesn't exist? But Off97Pro.000 exists in C:\windows? Sounds like a (recovery?) process has saved the .000 version. Is it 500+ KB? Have you tried renaming it as .stf and putting it into C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup\? And trying again.

Hi all,

thanks for the responses.
rockerfellerz suggests an uninstall, but I can't even do that as 1) the darn thing doesn't even do an auto run when I place the disc in the cd-rom and 2) I get the same error message when attempting to uninstall (I still have to use the "add/remove programs..."

I did however go in the direction that wolluf suggests, but in a different way. BTW, the file is about 500k, (503 to be exact). I actually browsed the Off97 cd-rom and looked for the .stf file. Then I copied and pasted it to the destination folder. Sadly, I get the same results. I even did it the way wolluf said and still got the same results.

At any rate, I did some online research seem to have found a fix by using an MS utility.
Here are the links if interested:
and
If you have problems with the MS Link just visit support.microsoft.com and do a search on how to completely remove Office 97 from a cpu.

Thanks to all for the help. Peace!
