I've got a NW 6.5 server, and I want to load whatever the newest support pack is. Novell lists SP1.1b as the newest. However the only version I can find is an Overlay, intended for new installs/upgrades. I don't want to reinstall the server, I just want to install the newest SP. When I try to use this overlay, it wants to reinstall the whole NW 6.5 package. Nowhere can I find the SP files on this CD.

Novell does have SP1.1a as a stand-alone package, but I don't think it's the newest SP.

Maybe I'm just being stupid this morning, but can someone please help me out?

Well, I gave up and called Tech Support. They told us to install SP1.1a (which is flawed). You can only get the newest SP if you are installing or upgrading.

Geez, sounds just like M$.

Well.... even if you've already got NW6.5 installed, you can use the overlay cd to update your server to the correct service pack version.

If you go to the GUI, INSTALL, then add.. Then point it to the .NI file on the NW65OS Cd.. It will pretty much "upgrade" your server to the version on the Overlay cd. Doesn't really care that your server is already at NW6.5.

Just don't break the process or abort.. and follow the instructions that it gives you on the screen. You've got to go through a couple reboots.

I started to do that, but early on it told me it was going to create a 4 gig SYS: partition. That's when I bailed out.

Hmm... Every time I have done it, it keeps SYS: in tact and doesn't even ask me. In fact, it should keep all of your settings, drivers, and other configs.

Are you BOOTING from the 6.5 Overlay CD and launching install? Or are you running the scripted install from the GUI on your already running 6.5 server?

You should be doing the latter.

I was booting from it. I'll try the scripted install next week when I load it on the next replacement server. Gotta get Groupwise to 6.5 this week.

Thanks.

Yeah it will definitely work better for you if you use the scripted install.

If you do boot from the CD, it assumes it's a new server. There is an option though where you can switch it to upgrade mode, but I can't recall what it is. If you look up "Down Server Upgrade" on Novell's site, you could probably find out what it is.
