I was eating a bowl of cereal this morning, and was reading the back as I ate. It read "Get bowled over by the great taste of this wholesome and nutritional acme cereal". While I did enjoy the taste, and I hope that the cereal is wholesome and has some nutritional value, am I wrong in my belief that it should have said "nutritious"?

It's a magical time of year in Philadelphia. Eagles training camp marks the end of another brutal season of complaining about the Phillies.

Yes, yes, I noticed my mistake at the moment I hit submit.
No need to pick on me for that. :)
Actually, you may if you wish. I know the crowd here. I am one of you, too. ;-)

I'm one of those types too. I find it's best to pick on yourself if you catch an error like that, before anyone else has the chance to. [thumbsup2]

rjoubert,
I find it's best to pick on yourself if you catch an error like that, before anyone else has the chance to.
Well, yes, but it becomes too troublesome and takes extra time to follow up your posts like this, AND think of a clever way to pick on yourself, instead of apologizing all the time. Naah. I am lazy and have many other things to do.

SantaMufasa,
Until I speak Russian as well as you speak English...
You see, it's not that hard.
First, you study the language in junior high, high school, and college.
Then, after several years (during which you might forget some of it), you move into a country that speaks that language.
Take several months of adult classes there.
Help your child(ren) with homework for the first year (after that, you child(ren) will be helping you to learn the language).
Find a job.
Subscribe to a good magazine.
Watch only TV programs in the language your learn for at least the first three years.
Try to read a book that was originally written in the language you try to learn, but you read it once, long ago, translated into your native language.
(But for goodness sake, DON'T switch to the new language at home with your child(ren) and always keep reading them books in your native language - or they will forget it faster than you learn the new one.)
Live in that country for several years (10+ for me now).

Cannot guarantee, but you would have then very good chance to learn the language. But: unless you are a child under 10 or extremely gifted, you will never completely get rid of the accent.

Sorry, Cyrillic shows up under the [Preview Post] button, but Cyrillic does not show up in the final posting. I had attempted to post (in Russian):

what is the definition of a man-made ingredient

Indeed, is wholemeal bread natural? If it is made only from wheat flour, water, sugar, salt and yeast you might think so but then flour is not found in the wild, neither is sugar. The wheat in my toast has been milled, cooked with other ingredients with which it undergoes chemical reactions, and then burnt (we are talking my toaster here).

All man-made products are transformations of substances from out environment, i.e. nature.

So, where do you draw the line?

I just realized that in this whole thread nobody mentioned this alternative to nutritional or nutritious:

Main Entry: nu·tri·tive
Pronunciation: 'nü-tr&-tiv, 'nyü-
Function: adjective
1 : of or relating to nutrition
2 : NOURISHING
- nu·tri·tive·ly adverb

Plus, they're no longer 100% natural. Too many artificial ingredients added over the years.

Personally, I like sugar on my cereal due to the [gray]{InvisibleAiche}[/gray] in its pronunciation. :) :)

And it's not just 'cause we quickly root for the "'Canes" around here. (joke intended for those who follow the National 'ockey League).

I laugh when I see all the 'organic' claims. I learned in high school chemistry class that organic means contains carbon which is pretty much every goddamn thing that is, was, or ever will be alive and a bunch of other stuff I surely wouldn't want to eat, to include steel, crude oil, coal, diamonds, cubic zirconia, manure, etc.

I know there are 'standards' now that govern what is 'organic' but there didn't used to be.

On the flip side of the same issue--sort of--and going at least somewhat tangential, who says 'organic' is any better for the consumer?

Care to enlighten me, anyone?

It's better as long as it's spelled properly because mis-spellings can lead to ambiguity.

Not sure if this means anything, but since I started drinking organic milk I cannot drink regular milk anymore as it gives me all kinds of digestive and mood problems.

I also have noticed that some organic foods make me feel more 'full', although I'm not sure if they are worth the high cost.

Professor: NOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I listen to the Adam Carolla morning show on my drive to work. They use the first letter of the offending word and leave it at that. F- this, that guy is such an A- hole, I stepped in a dogpile and got S- all over my shoe...etc.

Letters of complaint are, of course, referred to as "alpha-mails."

Yeah, yeah, I'll stop now...

Gooser as an ex-chemist it does amuse me, there's an awful lot of stuff that's strictly speaking "organic" which I'd not want to ingest!

However, I'm all for the "natural", as opposed to "organic" food movement - no pesticides, hormones, natural rearing and minimising slaughtering stress. Result - better flavour, better nutrition and better ecological results.

Tho' sometimes I have a suspicion that they just label the ugly vegetables "organic".

Personally, I prefer "organic" music to "saxophonic" or, worst of all, "bag-pipesic" music.
