Numbers changed to strange characters during form submit

In some of our forms when we type in an area code or something and push Submit, the numbers get changed into whacky characters like p€6 or ÄÀ8 and if i keep pressing Submit then the characters keep changing into other wierd characters. This didn't happen in our application before we upgraded from WebLogic 6 (windows) to 8.1 SP4 (on Linux).
I've changed my IIOP settings to UTF-8 and 16, but that didn't help.
Any ideas?

I forgot to mention that we're using Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production.
