Numbered List Changes to Bullets

In Word 97, I created an auto-numbered list of items. But when I inserted that list into another Word document, the list changed to bullets (one time dashes and another time little boxes) instead of numbers.

I was able to easily convert the bullets to numbers by going to "Format" --> "Bullets and Numbering," switching to the "Numbered" tab, and selecting one of the numbering choices. But since other people are going to be using these files and doing the insertion, I'd rather the change didn't happen. Any suggestions?

In the first document, see if it is attached to a template besides normal.dot.

I'm not sure how to tell what template a document is attached to. Would it matter, however, that the numbered items in the insertion document are based on a uniquely named, customized style not found in the document the numbered list is being inserted into? Other elements in the insertion document are also based on special styles, some of which are also found in the document being inserted into and some not.

When I created a small test document where I typed in the number "1" and a word, pressed enter, thus starting a sequence of numbered items, that file with a numbered list of three or four items did transfer into the other document with the numbers intact.

Specifically, see the part about *reset*. Do the reset on the PC, then open file 1 and pull file 2 in. Also, there's a lot of things here. Try this test:

Open file 2 by itself. Click on one of these bullet/number items. What is the style?

Okay, now select that style -- AGAIN. If the style is, for instance, heading 1, select heading 1 again as though it were not already applied. Are you asked to update the style? If Yes--the person who created the doc did not use the styles properly--they changed the formatting of the style, but didn't update it. Now, when you pull it into the new doc, it's picking up the heading1 style from that. YOu can't have two heading1s in one doc...

Thanks. You've given me a lot to think about and work on. I'll see what I come up with. One thing though: The style for the numbered items is uniquely named so that it won't get changed when it is pulled into the other document.

I'll get back to you after I've worked on this a while.

Correction:

Suppose this unique style was based on the normal style. And the normal style somewhere else is arial, and the normal style here is TNR...

Thanks! By resetting the numbering schemes in the insertion document and then selecting the correct numbering scheme from the defaults and applying that style feature to all the numbered entries with that style, the problem was solved! Now the document inserts just fine.
