I am running an XP computer on a Novell 6.5 network. Each night I run a number of scheduled tasks creating reports and emailing them to customers. I get an error message when I get in to work about a failure with NTVDM (presumably about the email program which is a DOS program). I am getting the following error in the event log: "Faulting NTVDM.EXE, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting mode ntdll.dll, fault address 0x00062ee9."
The reports (MS Access VBA programs) run OK but they do not get emailed. Does anyone have any ideas?

What help is there in the Scheduled Tasks log?

Have a look in the log in the Windows folder called SchedLgU.Txt.

Try resolving this issue by replacing the Command.com file in the System32 folder with the same file from another computer that is running Windows XP.

Perhaps your Email program might be happier in another operating system's Compatibility Mode?

Maybe it is even a Firewall blocking problem (Sp2's inbuilt firewall is on by default)?

To linney:

Thanks for your prompt response.
Checked the scheduled tasks log - no errors
I have copied command.com from another PC
Firewall is OFF

The frustrating part is that it was working perfectly well up until a few days ago. At that time I changed some file sharing attributes (turned simple file sharing off). Perhaps this is a problem.
Today I rebooted my PC, changed the clock time and watched as all reports ran and were emailed. There was not a single problem. The frustration is that these scheduled tasks need to run normally after work hours, and while I have remote access from my home PC, I do not know there is a problem until I check and then I have to restart my work PC and get them to run again.

Thanks for the other references - I will check them out.

alpder,
Not sure if you have solved this yet. We started having problems with some 16-bit apps recently and discovered that MS04-032 Microsoft patch was causing the problem. On our systems with the problem, the NTVDM.DLL was suppose to be changed out with the patch but was not. Instead, it was left as the original NTVDM.DLL in the \System32 directory but was added as the new NTVDM.DLL in the \DLLCACHE directory. We copied the NTVDM.DLL from the \DLLCACHE directory into the \SYSTEM32 directory and the apps worked again. Hope this helps.
