I can't update clock on cisco switches when the ntp server is a Windows2000 one.
Anybody heard about this problem ?
NTP frames seem to be good ans the cisco switch obtains the response but it does not update clock.
Here's the debugging (deb ntp packets + deb ntp val) :

04:50:29: NTP: xmit packet to 192.9.0.1:
04:50:29: leap 0, mode 3, version 3, stratum 3, ppoll 64

What about the error message from the deb command ? (where to find the explanation for "failed validity tests 20" ?)

You still having this problem?

Well, W2K calls it NTP, but it really is SNTP. SNTP is a small subset of NTP and is upward compatible, i.e. an SNTP client can get the time from an NTP server. The other way - NTP client get time from SNTP server - does NOT work.

Unfortunately, W2K only implements an SNTP server and your switches have real NTP clients. This is why it doesn't work.

But you can quite easily disable the W2K Time Service and install a real NTP server+client. I use a Windows port of the official Unix ntpd. You can download it from

It works very well at no cost. If you want to learn more about NTP visit
