I have a Dell Dimension L1000R PIII 1GHZ 128MB seagate 20GB Hdd and Soundcard+modem running Win98SE. The comp was alright the last time it was shut down. When started up the next day the following errors were noticed:

1. When started normally, "While initializing NTKERN... Windows protection error... you need to restart the computer". The computer would not start at all.

2. In safe mode, "While initializing device IOS... Windows protection error... you need to restart the computer". The computer would not start at all.
3. If I use step-by-step confirmation, immediately after trying to load msmouse.vxd, the computer generated either of the above errors.

However, the computer can start to the Prompt.

I have tried the following to no avail:

1. Reinstalled the Win98SE on the same Windows folder. Not the solution
2. Reinstalled Windows to another folder. not the solution
3. Removed Sound and Modem cards. Not the solution.
4. Removed memory one by one/and also replaced them with other working modules. Not the solution
5. Installed harddisk from a working WIn98SE. Error still there.
6. I tried to instal another OS-Win ME, the same error existed.
7. I ran virus scan on the prompt, nothing was detected...Probably the antivirus data file was a bit outdated
8. I ran the dell diagnostics, no H/W error detected.

PLEASE HELP

If this happens with a second hard drive with 98 installed on it, then it is definately hardware. Since you've already swapped memory, I'd try checking the power supply fan and cpu fans...make sure nothing is overheating. Otherwise, swap the video card, possibly the IDE cables. It may just be a motherboard issue.

It has onboard Video adapter. This far, I reckon i have to send it to supplier because it is still under warranty.

However, I will am interest in knowing how this could be solved if it ever happens. I have read different threads of user who have experience a similar problem. The solutions just seem to be varied even though it is the same error!

Anything linking this to a virus hooked to Int13 as suggested by a microsoft.com support page?

Any more suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.
