I used the trial NTI BACKUP NOW version for some time with great sucess. Bought the full deluxe version and now all I get are errors. WIN98 blue screen, illegal exception, unable to close packet. Any ideas? I used control panel to delete the trial version b/4 I installed the full version.

It should read device=c:\oakcdrom.sys /d:idecd1
Remember that you copied oakcdrom.sys to the c: folder.

Don't remember why at this point, but I really did copy it to c:\windows. I'll go back to following instructions though and put it in C:

Hi Ski: OK-now that that works, I have 1 or 2 more questions:
1) having done as above, after I do C:, cd\windows [b/c that is where WIN is],WIN/D:M I get a lot of floppy activigy and then:
invalid VxD dll call from CDUDF(3)to device "048B",service 1
your windows configuration is invalid. Run windows set up.
Continue y/n answer of Y gives me:
a device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. VFAT cannot continue loading. System halted.

FYI: after command prompt only response, I get a menu asking if i want CD- support or not and I respond in the positive.

Second question of a curosity nature, can I put the above autoexec and config.sys (tsh) commands in with SYSEDIT and boot from C:?

I asked the 2nd question because I can get into safe mode booting from C:, althouh w/o CD ro ZIP drives.

If you are able to get into Safe mode once again and you want to access your CD-RW drive in Safe mode to back up data, then follow the instructions to do so in one of my previous posts. And you DO NOT have to use the Windows boot floppy to do this.
(Note: that same post said to use sysedit from Start/Run in Safe mode to edit autoexec.bat and config.sys with the LH c:\mscdex.exe /D:IDECD1 and device=c:\oakcdrom.sys /D:IDECD1commands respectively).

OK SKI: I humbly bow to your persistance/patience. I followed the outlined steps and *they worked!*, kind of. I can read from them, but cannot write.
NTI CD MAKER [no supported CD-R or CD-RW drive detected]
AHEAD NERO [the Win-ASPI file '?.?' cannot be found ...Missing file is a win98 file. error 12: Init failed]
HP CD-WRITER [caused and invalid page fault in DIRAPI.DLL at 0167:68085667]

Do you have any patience left for more advice? [blush]

FYI:
autoexec.bat
SET CLASSPATH=C:\Program Files\PhotoDeluxe 2.0\AdobeConnectables
PATH C:\BITWAREshare.exe /F:4096 /L:40
LH c:\mscdex.exe /D:IDECD1

config.sys
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\setver.exe
device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\oakcdrom.sys /D:IDECD1

I always have patience, but I do not always have the answers and sometimes have to eat a little crow(like now).
Evidently, certain files are not loaded in Safe mode which prevents one from writing to CD's.
And the same may be true for Zip drives.
So you may not be able to back up data to either in Safe mode.
Oh well, we tried.

And your help is appreciated. And yup, we both learned (at lot for me!)

So, how are you on registery?
I think the key to WIN finding all my programs etc is the registery. So if I lose my regisery, I have to reinstall everything. Agree?

I'm temped to rename my registry and let WIN recreate it on boot and if I come up in full windows, then my problem is the reg. Comments? [ponder] In which case, I would unrename it and become an expert in regedit. (I cannot get any worse off!)

Do you know if I reload WIN if it saves my reg or gives me a brand new empty one? [ponder]

Thanks for the help...

Windows will not create a new Registry and boot up if the existing Registry is renamed in DOS.
Windows has to see an undamaged Registry named system.dat in the C:\Windows folder in order to boot up.

Here's a way that may allow you to determine if the existing Registry is damaged:
-Press and hold the Ctrl key during startup, select 'Command Prompt', and press Enter.
-At the C:\> prompt type c:\windows\command\attrib -h -s -r c:\system.1st and press Enter.
-Type c:\windows\command\attrib -h -s -r c:\windows\system.dat and press Enter.
-Type ren c:\windows\system.dat *.dax and press Enter.
-Type copy c:\system.1st c:\windows\system.dat and press Enter.
-Restart your computer.

If Windows starts up, then the Registry(system.dat renamed system.dax) which Windows had been using was damaged.
And Windows is now using a Registry(system.1st renamed system.dat) which was created as a backup when Windows was originally installed.
However, if you want to run Windows with the new Registry, then you will have to reinstall all programs, drivers, updates, etc., which were installed after Windows was originally installed.

If that option is undesireable, then restart in the command mode, at the C:\> prompt type c:\windows\command\attrib -s -h -r c:\windows\system.dat, press Enter, type copy c:\windows\system.dax c:\windows\system.dat, press Enter, and see if reinstalling Windows over itself resolves the problem.
If not, then your only recourse may be to reformat and reinstall Windows from scratch.

"If not, then your only recourse may be to reformat and reinstall Windows from scratch."

Before doing this, you can try reinstalling Windows to a new folder.
