Is it advisable for me to install NTFS or FAT 32 for Windows 2000 Advance Server? Is it true that if I use NTFS,I will not be able to edit system files from the MSDOS?

I formatted an external hard drive with NTFS and now cannot access it with a WIn98 PC. I wish I had used FAT32.

I have a Win2k advanced server machine formatted FAT32 right now. I had some issues with getting some services to run properly, and with a Microsoft tech on the phone we had to do a complete reinstall. When I reached that point of installation on how to format the drive, they said "It does not matter at all". NTFS is more stable, but FAT32 uses HD space more efficiently.
As for editing system files with MSDOS, I am not sure, but I think you should be able to. If that is a major concern of yours, why not install just Win2K advanced server and choose NTFS then try editing it. I think the total time to install it was a couple hours max.

I do not believe you can edit any ntfs partion using dos...it will not be able to see it...there may be some software out to allow it but im not sure what it is

Do you have any ideas what programme do i need to install in order to recover any damage system files from DOS?

I will be installing 2 OS in a 20GB hard disk. The 2 OS I will be installing are Windows XP Pro and Windows 2k AS.So,should i be installing NTFS or FAT32?Please help.Thanx a lot.

I guess the first question would be is .. why are you using windows 2000 "advanced" server. when you don't even know if you should use ntfs or not. ?

it's not ment as an insult. but advanced server is for enterprises and LARGE companies and not generally home use or small business. I would suggest stop wasting the computer resources you have been with windows advanced server and if you need server goto just straight 2k server. Somehow i get the impression it wasn't paid for anyways.

if you format it with ntfs you will lose MSdos access, but you can gain access with a linux boot disk. a whole different learning curve.

NTFS also has smaller cluster sizes. so you'll find files on an NTFS system will take less space then a fat32 system
