ntbackup not compressing data

Or maybe the drive isn't.
Seagate STT8000A is the drive and the option to compress the data is checked. Using 4gig native/8gigcompressed tapes. If they go over 4gigs the backup never finishes.
Could it be the sony tr4 tapes?
