Issue: I have a Compaq Presario 5070 with a built-in Standard VGA card. I have to have Win NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6a) on this computer and it continues to default to the 16 color Standard VGA driver ("washing out" my internet pages, deprieving me of Java, etc.).
Note: Previously, this desktop had Win98 and it was able to load a driver other than the Standard VGA Driver and give me more than 16 colors.
Question: What can I do (whatever is needed!!!) with my present hardware and software setup???
P.S. Thankfully, I have the time and permission to fiddle with the System's Registry if need be, but, I'm not allowed to get a Video Card for it.
Thanks, sincerely, mascott3. XOXOXO

Hi,

Can you remember what the make and model of video chip is in the machine? If NT 4 doesn't have a driver built in for that chip it will use the standard VGA as the default.

The HP/Compaq support site doesn't seem to have specific video drivers for any operating system (see link below), but software such as Aida32 ( or Belarc Advisor ( may be able to tell you what the video chip in the machine is, so you can get hold of proper drivers for it.

You helped me immeasurably jrbarnett!!! I downloaded AIDA32 from like you suggested. It identified my chips (wow, it gives a lot of info!). Then, I Google-searched endlessly for an "SIS 530" driver (my system chip, obviously). Tried many sites but were all for Win98Me or $$$sites until I got to Their driver download for "SIS 530" worked for both WinNT4 as well as Win98/Me. I installed it and it works perfect. I can't thank you enough jrbarnett. Sincerely, mascott3

Glad I was able to help and it has fixed your problem.
