I have an NT4 Domain with mixed windows NT and 2000 servers and workstaion. Due to machine room refurbishment over the weekend all my servers were disconnected for a day, they were all connected the next day however one of the servers can longer communicate with some servers and workstations on the network, All the servers and workstation are displayed in network neighbourhood but if you click on them you get path not found. it can ping 80% of the servers and about 50% of the workstations. I can no longer ping it from my workstation I get the error message that path is not found.

The only thing that changed in my network during refurbishment is all the servers are now connected to Allied telesyn switch blade 4000 as opposed to the previous 3com Core Builder. Every other equipment works ok.

I am very despirate as Trend office scan, sms 2.0 runs off this machine. I cannot longer update the virus software on the clients machine as there is no connectivity between this server,my firewall server and the workstation.

thanks

Eve

If nothing changed except the switch, then I would suspect a bad or misconfigured port on the switch or a cable went bad during the move.

Try a different port on the switch or replace the cable.

Then again, maybe the "bad" server just needs to be power cycled ;-)

on the server, ping 127.0.0.1, this will test if tcp is installed correctly,

on the server, ping the server IP Address, this will test
if the ip address is bound to the nic correctly.

try to ping a server you cant connect to, do an arp -a
this will show what is in the arp cache, ( what servers that have a resolveable MAC address.

try to ping a server you can connect to, arp -a
this will prove connectivity.

the is all at the network layer, move to the application layer, if all the above functions correctly the problem is at a higher layer. use telnet to telnet to an open port on another server , i.e. mail server telnet x.x.x.x 25

this will prove connectivity at the highest layer, application layer.
