I have had a couple of migrations in the past where I needed to migrate an NT4 domain to W2K AD. NO problem, just upgrade the PDC to W2K setup AD and finish. Now I am migrating an NT4 domain that I cannot Upgrade the NT4 system to W2K (Too old). I need some advise on the best course of action. I have an NT4 PDC,and a Windows 2000 Terminal Server. I am going to demote the NT4 to BDC then Setup AD on the Terminal Server to set it up as the DC. How would I migrate the information and user database to the W2K machine once it is promoted? check out this Thread. Basically, you'll want to make the Terminal Server an NT4 BDC...follow it from there....

I'm not sure that I'd go about it that way. I'd find a new machine. Install NT 4 on it as a BDC to the existing domain. Promote the new box to a PDC, then upgrade it to 2K AD. Once that's done, you can remove the old PDC (now BDC), or upgrade it.

There are tools available to migrate users, as you are suggesting, but you will also need to make changes to all the client boxes. You can't install an AD on the same LAN as an NT domain with the SAME DOMAIN NAME.

I'm sorry Mr. Collins, I was working under the assumption that you only had these 2 servers to work with. If you're able to get a new server, then Mr. Lamb is 100% correct.

Or if he has just 2 Domain Controllers (for budget reasons) to work with I would think he would have to reinstall the Terminal server as a BDC in the Nt4 domain, promote this DC to a PDC, upgrade to Windows2000 and setup the Terminal Server again. Then upgrade the 2nd DC (which would be a NT4 BDC).
